What Labour is doing for the next generation
June 23, 2008
The Prime Minister today announced a widespread set of measures to further enhance what Labour is doing to help the parents of young children in an increasingly hostile economic climate. Under a new scheme, parents with children under 5 will each receive a payment of £200 to help with the rising costs of looking after their offspring. The scheme is in addition to a £200 million child development grant to deal with healthcare, literacy and parenting, as well as a special £10 million grant to cope with the particular costs associated with London. Furthermore, Labour is investing in, and encouraging, innovation by local authorities with the provision of £20 million for new approaches to dealing with child poverty. The move clearly shows Labour’s continuing commitment to the future of our children and that it remains above all the party of aspiration and social mobility.
The Conservative party’s obsession with the voluntary sector simply proves that they are not a party prepared to take the right decisions for the hard working families of this country, and would prefer to fob them off by offloading them to charitable foundations, who for all their good work, simply lack the means to achieve the great endeavour of lifting our most disadvantaged children out of poverty. David Cameron is not interested in the ordinary men and women of Great Britain but remains the leader of the privileged and wealthy. The Tories have not become ‘compassionate’ in any way, but as Thatcherite and indifferent to the welfare of our most needy citizens as ever.
